The American Land Title Association (ALTA) was formed in 1907 and is the face and voice for the abstract and title insurance industry. Nearly all title insurance companies are members of ALTA. Currently, ALTA has more than 6,000 active members consisting of abstractors, title agents and title insurance companies nationwide. ALTA provides federal lobbying, education, research, standard setting, meetings, communications, and public relations services for the title industry. ALTA is most commonly known for its development of title insurance policy and endorsement forms that are used nearly exclusively.

ALTA’s stated goals are to:

• Adopt “Principles of Fair Conduct” for the association and its members that demonstrate a commitment to the ethical and fair treatment of consumers.
• Conduct ongoing industry education to promote the fair and ethical treatment of consumers, including adherence to the laws and regulations governing the title insurance business.
• Develop a consumer education program to help consumers become knowledgeable purchasers of title insurance and related services.
• Work with federal legislators and regulators to help them better understand the title insurance business.
• Solicit feedback on how the industry can better meet consumer needs.
